Driving in the Snow in Massachusetts
By Gary E. Haffer

Two weeks ago Massachusetts experienced its first snowfall that hit some areas with a blanket of snow. Usually, Massachusetts do not experience that type of weather until after Thanksgiving but since this year is different from other years, who can predict. The Farmer’s Almanac predicts that there will be major snowfall in late January and February with blizzard conditions for New England. What are Massachusetts drivers to do?

subaru If you are in the market for a snow vehicle then here is a great starting list of options to look for when you purchase a vehicle that can handle the snow. The list is as follows:

  • Top of any list – all-wheel drive
All wheel drive is no longer reserved to Jeeps, trucks, and luxury vehicles. Many passenger cars also employ this winter snow equalizer.
  • Stability controls
This is a great option to have on your vehicle.
  • Anti-lock brakes
Once reserved for only the top luxury cars, they have made their way to passenger cars as well as trucks like the Toyota Land Cruiser.
  • Traction control (for front wheel vehicles and rear wheel drive cars)
If your vehicle is navigating treacherous roads and has front wheel drive vehicle, this can be a tremendous help. Of course, all the stability and traction control technology may not be enough to avoid a crash. But starting off with an edge doesn’t hurt.

These vehicles are great to talk about purchasing, but if you already own a vehicle without some of this technology then your best bet is to have winter tires installed on ALL four wheels during the winter months.

Good luck and when the next snow storm happens, you can drive in the harsh winter elements with the confidence that your vehicle is snow ready.
